Sportsong of the Week #3 is unlike the earlier songs not an intended tribute song to a team or a sport. But it probably is one of the most covered songs in the world and the most sung song in football stadiums in the world by singers and the supporters.
Originally "You'll never walk alone" was a showtune from the musical Carousel made in 1945. Respect to the original writers Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II! When in 1963 Gerry and the Pacemakers from Liverpool covered the song, a tradition was born. It became a huge hit song, their 3rd consecutive nr.1 song in the charts, and Liverpool Football Club decided to start playing the song before home games at Anfield Road.
Now, the song is played at a lot of stadiums around the world, creating a singing chorus of supporters. At Celtic FC and Liverpool they still play the song before games. A dream is to hear it live at least ones at Anfield Road! Grown men and women, children, grandmas and grandpas, everybody singing their lungs out. Getting goosebumps already!
The music video shown here was made in 2013, 50 years after the first release. Lead singer Gerry Marsden said of the clip: "The video is fitting with the song. It is emotive with the passion of the people". Below there is also a music video included with the game footage of the epic final of Liverpool against Ac Milan. Just to get some extra emotion and chills going on a friday. Being down 3-0 at half time, they did the almost impossible. Good to remember sometimes that you never walk alone.
Full lyrics "You'll Never Walk Alone" - Gerry and the Pacemakers:
When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm There's a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm Is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk
You'll never walk You'll never walk alone
