Lucky #7 already! Times flies when you are having fun! This weeks Sportsong of the Week was written by Casey Beathard and Dave Turnbull, but sang and recorded in 2010 by country legend Kenny Chesney and reached no.1 in the US Hot Country Songs as a result! Let's go to the country side!
As a high school and college football player himself Kenny knew 'as maybe only someone who has felt that thrill of rushing out onto the field on a cold Friday night can - that was exactly how it is. It [the song] also gives you a sense of why playing football in high school is such a powerful thing for anyone who does it. It's life changing. for anyone who's never experienced that, this song helps them understand why.'
This song is obviously about high school football. The music video features many famous football players and coaches talking about their experiences playing high school football and advice they would give to kids, as well as clips of famous players and coaches from the college and professional ranks, past and present. The Boys of Fall was the lead single of Chesney's 12th studio album Hemingway's Whiskey. Chesney said of the song 'is a perfect description of how I grew up and where I grew up.'
The video is 8 minutes in total, so sit back, relax and think about yourself as a young athlete dreaming big and the strong comradery for life you built with your teammates.
As a bonus: Kenny subsequently produced and co-directed the documentary film The Boys of Fall for ESPN. See the full film below!
Full lyrics "The Boys of Fall" - Kenny Chesney
When I feel that chill, smell that fresh cut grass
I'm back in my helmet, cleats, and shoulder pads
Standin' in the huddle listenin' to the call
Fans goin' crazy for the boys of fall
They didn't let just anybody in that club
Took every ounce of heart and sweat and blood
To get to wear those game day jerseys down the hal
lThe kings of the school, man, we're the boys of fall
[Chorus:]
Well it's, turn and face the stars and stripes
It's fightin' back them butterflies
It's call it in the air alright yes sir we want the ball
And it's knockin' heads and talkin' trash
It's slingin' mud and dirt and grass
It's I got your number, I got your back
When your back's against the wall
You mess with one man, you got us all
The boys of fall
In little towns like mine that's all they got
Newspaper clippings fill the coffee shops
The old men will always think they know it all
Young girls will dream about the boys of fall
[Chorus:]
Well it's, turn and face the stars and stripes
It's fightin' back them butterflies
It's call it in the air alright yes sir we want the ball
And it's knockin' heads and talkin' trash
It's slingin' mud and dirt and grass
It's I got your number, got your back
When your back's against the wall
You mess with one man, you got us all
The boys of fall
[Chorus:]
Well it's, turn and face the stars and stripes
It's fightin' back them butterflies
It's call it in the air alright yes sir we want the ball
And it's knockin' heads and talkin' trash
It's slingin' mud and dirt and grass
It's I got your number, got your back
When you back's against the wall
You mess with one man, you got us all
The boys of fall
We're the boys of fall
We're the boys of fall
