This song has been in my head for quite some time now. Probably because I'm making a Maradona/La12/Boca Juniors art series in commission at the moment and I'm listening to all of the songs they sing in the stadiums. Sportsong of the Week #40 is my favourite and undoubtedly the most famous song about Argentine football legend Maradona: 'La Mano de Dios' performed by the late Rodrigo.
Rodrigo Alejandro Bueno, known by his stage name Rodrigo was the leading Argentine singer of cuarteto music. Bueno's style was marked by his on-stage energy and charisma. His short, dyed hair and casual clothes differed from typical cuarteto singers with strident colors and long curly hair. During his career, Bueno expanded cuarteto music to the Argentine national scene, remaining one of the main figures of the genre.
His song 'La mano de Dios' (The Hand of God) is one of his best known songs for sure. It's a dance classic in Argentina! It tells the story of the former No.10’s rise to greatness and celebrates Diego Maradona his most famous goal. For those who don't know: Maradona scored his first goal in the quarter finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, which they eventually won, with his hand, which came to be known as the goal scored by 'The Hand of God'.
Rodrigo tragically died in a car accident in 2000, of which some people believe it was not an accident, because he was a pawn in a feud between rival mobsters. But his influence and this song lives on with Maradona even performing it himself several times! A song about and by interesting and never boring legends in Argentina!
